“May Ball” Library Display

Did you know that back in 1949-50 the RAU May Ball had a different name? In the Royal Agricultural College Journal it is referred to as the “Summer Term Dance”. Then, in the following year, it changed its name to the “Summer Term Ball”. The “May Ball” title was introduced in 1953, coinciding with the Queen’s coronation.

The RAU Library’s ”May Ball” display includes tickets, posters, photographs, menu cards, programmes and reviews that clearly demonstrate the change in attitude and tradition of this form of student entertainment over the decades.
