RFID and self-service in the RAU Library

RFID (self-issue) set-up has completed during the Easter vacation with the help of the supplier Bibliotheca.  Two self-issue kiosks are now located near the Heritage catalogue (OPACs) and as a result, self-service facilities are now available in the library to issue/renew/return books by yourselves.  Coming soon will be the additional facility to pay your fines online.

The introduction of the RFID technology is part of our ongoing commitment to supporting student needs. The RFID technology will enable you, our users, to take more control of your library transactions.

Some of the main benefits of RFID are:

  • It offers a faster and more efficient way of borrowing and returning books.
  • It means less queuing at the library desk
  • It allows library staff to focus on answering your queries and providing an even better quality service at the library help desk.

So, you only need to bring your id card with you to the library on a regular basis.  For a brief period we will be able to issue books to you at the desk if you do not have your card with you, but very soon we will cease doing that as a matter of course.  From that point on, which we will announce in advance, it will be a matter of ‘no card – no borrowing of books’.

The RAU Library wants to thank you for your patience during the installation period and the minor disruption particularly at the library entrance when the new gates were installed.

It is still early days but we hope you enjoy and benefit from this new self-issue system.
