RAU Library has put together some FAQs to make things a little bit easier for you.

Q. When is the library open during term-time?

A. 8.45am-10pm Mon-Thurs, 8.45am-8pm Fri, 10-1, 1.30-5 weekends

Q. How many books can I borrow?

A.12 if you are a 1st or 2nd year undergraduate, 15 if you are a final year undergraduate, and 20 if you are a postgraduate.

Q. How long can I borrow library books for?

A. Most books are lent for one week (renewable), but there are some variations.  Please see the main Student Library Guide for more details.

Q. How many times can I renew a book?

A. Normally up to 10 times.

Q. Can I renew my books online?

A. Yes, online as well as in person or by e-mail or phone.  Please ask in the library for a renewals slip or see the Student Library Guide.

Q. Can I reserve books?

A. Yes, if all copies are out on loan you can reserve copies of a book.

Q. Do you charge for overdue (late returned) books?

A. Yes, we do – but avoiding charges is easy!  Check your University e-mails for alerts from the library, and bring your items back on time or renew them before they become overdue.  Simple!

Q. Will you charge me if I lose or damage a book?

A. Yes, we will.  Please see the main Student Library Guide for details.

Q. Can we borrow journals?

A. No, we no longer lend journals as they are extremely difficult to replace if lost or damaged.  Please scan or copy articles from journals, or go to the e-journal and print out or download the article/s you want to read.

Q. Can you get books from other libraries for me?

A.Yes, this service is called ‘interlibrary loan’ or ‘document delivery’.  You are unlikely to make use of this service unless you are a final year undergraduate or a postgraduate student.

Q. Can I visit other university libraries?

A. Yes, please ask in the library about the SCONUL Access Scheme.  You may even be able to borrow from other libraries under this scheme.

Q How do I find library resources?

Q. Can I access e-resources off campus, as well as on campus?

A. Yes, in the vast majority of cases you can.  You may need a little help with this, so check out our Help Guides on Gateway or ask a member of the library team.

Q. Can e-Books be downloaded as well as read on screen?

A. Yes, most of our e-Books can be downloaded to a PC, flash drive or to a portable device such as an ipad for 1-7 days (Dawsonera) or for 14 days (ebrary).  Please be aware that a small number of publishers, however, do not permit downloading.

Q. Do you have printers / computers / scanners in the library?

A. Yes, we do – in particular at the back of the Library in the Reading Room.

Q. How much is printing?

A. Printing charges are set by the IT department and are currently 4p per page for monochrome, and 15p per page for colour.

Q. Is there wireless access in the library?

A. Yes, the entire library is wireless enabled.

Q. Can we do group work in the library?

A. No, the library is for quiet individual study.  Please use the library foyer or the ground floor of the Garner block for group study.

Q. What do I do if an area of the library is too noisy to work in?

A. If asking people yourself to please be quiet doesn’t work, please send an e-mail to with the subject line NOISE and an indication of which room you are in.  A member of the team will then investigate.

Q. Can I eat and drink in the library?

A. No, only bottled water is permitted.  There are plenty of other places on campus to consume food and hot or sugary drinks.
