This spring the RAU Library decided to prepare a display with the theme “Country Houses and Conservation”. Country houses continue to make a major contribution to the UK’s cultural heritage and were once, of course, important places of employment for many rural inhabitants Country Houses have many tales to tell. Many survived against the odds, and others have sadly disappeared following a decline that began with the agricultural depressions of the 1870s and continued apace in the 20th century.
The RAU Library holds a number of beautifully illustrated books and magazines that will allow you to appreciate the chequered history of Country Houses, learn about their management and conservation in modern times, and how they might retain their significance in a challenging future. Perhaps some students will even choose to focus on Country Houses in their dissertation?
The display can be seen in the library, near the front desk.
