Latest News @ the RAU Library

RAU Library News…

1. We have employed an additional part-time library assistant (commencing end of September 2013) who will work on Tuesdays and (term-time only) Sundays. This allows us to lengthen our Sunday opening hours from 12 to 5 to 10 to 5, bringing it in line with Saturdays. This new person’s previous experience of working in the library at Imperial College, London should make her a very useful additional member of the team.

2. We have hosted a work-experience student, Rachel Jago, (from Stroud High School) in the RAU library for a week in the final week of this term, 17th to the 21st June. She appears to have enjoyed the experience, as have we, and I’m sure she now knows much more about the very varied work that goes on ‘behind the scenes’ in a modern academic library.

3. RAU Library staff will be visiting ‘en masse’ Harper Adams University Library on July 10th. The Librarian at Harper, Kathryn Greaves, has kindly agreed to host us as part of a knowledge-exchange, sharing of good practice visit. In particular we will be looking at: the use of RFID technology in libraries; managing reading lists and matching them to library stock; the use of social media to market library services; and the use of Resource Discovery Services to enable students to locate e-resources more easily. We’ll be posting more details soon…

4. In the final week of this Summer Term we also bid farewell to our team of 3 student helpers who have assisted us ‘above and beyond …’ in keeping the library open for longer in the evenings and, occasionally, weekends. They were drawn from the IRD/SAFS Masters courses, and they have been exceptionally good to work with, essentially managing themselves once they had received their initial training last October. The only downside is we now have to train a new set of students afresh this coming October …
