This September Theano Manoli, College Library Assistant, was a guest speaker at the 17th PanhellenicAcademic Libraries Conference in Greece, having been invited by Mr Georgios Zachos, Library Directoat the University of Ioannina. The subject of the Conference was ‘Academic library evaluation as a measure of institutional quality assessment.’ The Conference took place in the Congress Centre of the University of Ioannina from the 24th until the 26th September 2008. Here is Theano’s report.
“Being a speaker at the Hellenic Academic Libraries Conference gave me the opportunity to present the Royal Agricultural College Library’s Benchmarking Exercise and Evaluative Review which was undertaken in 2004 to the wider academic community. The actual talk (and accompanying article) was entitled: How do we compare? the experience of benchmarking a smaller University College Library in the UK Higher Education sector.
This was my first time as an invited speaker at a Conference though I have presented at a conference once before and of course I was rather nervous about it, but it all went smoothly and I received very positive comments on my presentation and got good feedback from my peers. Although Greek is my first language I chose to write the article and to give the presentation in English since this is now the language I use at work in the UK!
On a personal level my participation as a speaker at such a conference was a big achievement, and as an attendee it was most definitely a worthwhile and valuable experience.”
Also present at the Conference was Dr Eric Davies of Loughborough University who led the actual Review of the College Library in 2004, and it was very nice to be able to report positively on changes that have happened in the College Library since the Review.
